During the 6–8 week training period, learners cover the following key areas:

Introduction to Solar Energy & Renewable Power

Learners are introduced to solar energy concepts, the importance of renewable energy, and the role of solar power in Uganda’s energy sector.

This section explains how solar power works and why it is a sustainable solution.

Solar Safety Practices & Electrical Basics

This module focuses on personal safety, tool handling, electrical safety, and risk prevention.

Learners also study basic electricity principles such as voltage, current, resistance, and power, which are essential for solar system understanding.

Solar System Components & Equipment

Trainees learn about solar panels, charge controllers, inverters, batteries, mounting structures, cables, and protective devices.

They are taught how to identify quality components and understand their functions.

Types of Solar Systems (Off-Grid, Grid-Tied & Hybrid)

This section explains different solar system configurations used in Uganda.

Learners understand where and when to use off-grid systems, grid-connected systems, and hybrid systems with battery backup.

Solar System Sizing & Design

Students are trained to calculate power requirements, size solar panels, batteries, and inverters based on client needs.  This includes load assessment, energy calculations, and system planning.

How long does it take to learn solar installation in Uganda?

You can become a trained and certified solar installer in six to eight weeks at a reputable training institution such as Nextgen Institute of Technology. This duration is sufficient to cover solar theory, electrical basics, safety procedures, system sizing, installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Learners gain both confidence and competence through hands-on practice.

What does a solar installer do?

A solar installer is responsible for installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing solar power systems. Their duties include assessing energy needs, mounting solar panels, connecting electrical components, installing batteries and inverters, testing system performance, and ensuring safety standards are met.

Solar installers may work on residential homes, commercial buildings, schools, health centers, and rural electrification projects.

Beyond installation, a professional solar technician must be able to diagnose system faults, perform routine maintenance, advise clients on energy usage, and ensure systems operate efficiently for many years.

Is solar installation difficult to learn?
